I was working at an animal hospital when one day, one of the vets came in with a crate housing an animal of some sort. Couldn’t tell it was a puppy until she mentioned it. He was dirty and gross. She mentioned someone left this puppy on her doorstep that morning. The plan was to check him out and then take him to Animal Care and Control.
While waiting for test results, he was put in the isolation room which was in the basement of the 3 story hospital. We could hear him crying throughout. Patients came in asking what was the crying about. I felt terrible for the little guy.
On my lunch break, I found out from the vet he is only 8 weeks old. He is covered in fleas, has 3 types of worms, umbilical cord hernia, and he is malnourished.
I asked if I could go visit him. His cries were heartbreaking. I was given approval with a warning. “Don’t expect him to come near you. He is very scared and confused.”
I went in to the basement and into the isolation room. He was in a kennel on the floor. I sat down on the floor, opened his cage and he immediately jump on me and started to suckle on my fingers. I knew I couldn’t leave him there.
After making sure he doesn’t have a chip, I took this tiny 7 pound little thing. Today, Dalek is a giant 100 pound German Shepherd mix and is the love of my life.
