This past winter the SF SPCA held a Pop-Up Cat Cafe in One Embarcadero Center which happened to be two buildings down from where I worked. Some of my coworkers decided to stop by to see the cats (and the dogs) at the location to de-stress from work, and I wanted to see this gorgeous orange tabby named Hugo. What started as a plan to just visit turned into a daily mission of making sure I brought Hugo home with me. When I first met Hugo I only saw whatever was visible from peering around the mural he stayed behind each day at the Pop-Up. Not a shy cat, but definitely uninterested in the seven other cats in the room and the daily visitors—especially the people doing yoga in the room each week. He and I made progress with each other through my daily visits, and eventually I convinced him to come out. He laid right on the edge of my lap—as if I wasn’t already in love with him. These daily visits earned me the nickname of Hugo’s Mom (which I proudly still embrace by friends at the SF SPCA). I can say our adoption story was just as much, if not more, Hugo choosing me as me choosing Hugo. In his home, Hugo’s gone from what the SF Chronicle referred to as a “fluffy brown skeptic” to an adventurous cat who loves to steal treats and pounce on his feather toy between the pillows. He even likes to lay on my yoga mat as well and do some downward facing cat!
